Right, best Guinness in town. It’s the question that ends friendships and keeps people arguing in taxi ranks at two in the morning. Get it wrong in Liverpool and you’re done.

We skipped the tourist spots near the Dock and the chains that do a half-decent job if you’re desperate. Went to the proper ones. The independents where the pour takes longer than the walk home.

The Heavyweights

Two names come up first, every time: Shenanigans and Pogue Mahone. If you’ve had a pint in either, you already know.

Shenanigans on Tithebarn Street. The pour takes its time. We watched one land on the bar and nearly clocked it on a stopwatch. Head thick enough to stand a teaspoon in. Nothing rushed, nothing fancy. Just the pint done right.

Then Pogue Mahone on Seel Street. Different feel. Darker, live music most nights, older regulars who’ve been drinking there longer than you’ve been driving. The Guinness is just as good. Creamier, if anything. You’ll finish the first one before you’ve taken your coat off.

The Boss Pour Nobody Mentions

The Grapes is known for the wine and the jazz, but the Guinness tap round the back of the bar is quietly one of the best in the city. No queue, no fuss. Get there before 7 on a Friday or forget it.

The Verdict

Tie. If you want Tithebarn Street, it’s Shenanigans. If you want Seel Street, it’s Pogue Mahone. Anyone telling you The Dispensary is better has either never been or they’re having you on.
